Qalunia () — A Forgotten Village Beneath the Forest

Qalunya was once a vibrant Palestinian village located just west of Jerusalem, nestled on the slope of the valley leading down from the city toward the coastal plain. With its fertile land, ancient olive groves, and a spring that quenched generations, Qalunya stood as a gateway between Jerusalem and the wider land of Palestine. But in April 1948 — during the early months of the Nakba — the village was attacked, its inhabitants forcibly expelled, and its homes destroyed. Today, Qalunya no longer appears on most maps. Its ruins lie hidden beneath a forest planted by the Jewish National Fund and renamed “Ein Karem Forest” to obscure the village’s original identity. Suggested description for your photography collection or Picfair post: “Qalunya — Under the Forest, a Village Sleeps” In this photograph, nature seems to bloom freely — but it blooms over memory. The terraced hills, wildflowers, and pine trees are not just scenery; they are a cover. My lens captures not just a landscape, but a truth hidden beneath the silence: Here once stood homes with names, families, laughter, stories. And though the village is no longer visible, the land remembers. Every rock is a witness. Every tree roots itself in absence.
